History of Trencavel

V ount of Albi, Carcassonne and Béziers on the death of his father, Robert II in 1194, Raimond - Roger is just nine years old. He has as guardian Bertrand de Saissac who protects openly Cathars; maybe he is a supporter too. On the eve of the crusade against Albigeois, Raimond - Roger meets his uncle, Raimond VI of Toulouse, but the two people can not agree, considering the fights between the two lignes of descent since a long time: Trencavel, vassals of the count of Toulouse, pays there homage to the king of Aragon, constant enemy of Raimond. When the crusaders' army enters Languedoc, Raimond - Roger make submits to the papal legate who refuses it. He defends Béziers then leaves the town to take refuge in Carcassonne. The city, where was just a surrounding wall, is besieged from August 1-st, 1209. After the defeat of a first assault, Pierre II of Aragon intervenes to tempt a mediation refused by Raimond - Roger. But one week later, on proposition of a knight of Trencavel's family, this one goes out of the town to negotiate with the Crusaders. It seems that he accepted his conditions and is taken hostage. But he stays in prison and dies on November 10. Montfort pays the las honours to him, better way to show to the people that its Lord is really dead!
